OUR DEPARTMENT
To your left there is a bookcart containing new items, so that you won't overlook them as they are added to the collection. To your right you will see two bookshelves. Here you will find a display of items for sale by Old Richardville Publications, the Howard County Genealogical Society, and other local authors. Next to the shelves is a display which contains many recent issues of genealogical magazines and newsletters.

Around the corner to your right is the computer area. We have three computers for genealogical research. All three computers have internet, the computer in the center is dedicated to a variety of genealogical CDs, and the distant computer, "Imagine" is equiped with a scanner, cd burner and color printer. We are equipped with a photocopier, and two reader/printers for microfilm, one of which is equipped to copy microfiche, also. All 8.5" X 11" and 8.5" X 14" copies and printouts are ten cents per print; 11" X 14" copies may be produced on the regular copier only for thirty cents each. Color prints are also thirty cents each.

We have a microfilm reading room with seven microfilm readers. We also have eight study carrels equipped with electrical outlets (for your personal laptop computer) and personal lighting.

Near the microfilm cabinets are some of our special book collections. These include Census indexes, Quaker books, Passenger Lists, Native Americans, African American, British Isles, and German Genealogy.

There are approximately 350 cataloged family histories in the collection.

A local aspect of the collection is the vertical file with topics of local history and genealogy interest. There are also card files with obituaries, marriage notices, and birth notices, and an index card system of vital and biographical information cards. Although these are by no means complete, they are very helpful to many researchers of Howard County people. An example of a vertical file folder topic is Ryan White. There are many topics including biographies, business and industry, local architecture.
