How to Obtain Military Pension Records for Pre-World War I Veterans
To obtain paper copies of Civil War military service records order by mail using an NATF Form 86 for each soldier. Copies of Civil War pension records can be ordered by mail using an NATF Form 85 for each soldier. These may be obtained by requesting them through the National Archives website at http://www.archives.gov/research/order/
If you use the Kokomo-Howard County Public Library's Genealogy and Local History Department, you may obtain forms in person, by requesting them from the staff.

Some things you may learn from pension records:
- Date and place of birth of veteran
- Date and place of death of veteran
- Veteran's place and date of marriage
- Wife's maiden name
- Names and birthdates of veteran's children
- Veteran's health condition.
- Places veteran lived.
- Letters and affidavits written by the veteran and/or his neighbors and/or family.
