Long Term Lovers of Howard County

James Arthur and Lena Marie (Smith) Jarrett : 67 Years
Married December 24th, 1931

In the Middle of the Road Where James &
Lena Got Married in 1931

James was 23 and Lena only 16 when they were married on December 24, 1931, "in the middle of the road" near the little town of Poughkeepsie, Arkansas. Each of them walked from their respective homes, the preacher walked from his, and where they met was where the wedding took place.

Arthur and Lena worked on their farm, which his father had deeded over to him. They sold the farm and moved to Kokomo in 1955 in order to give their five children better opportunities. Arthur got a job at Delco Radio and Lena was a homemaker. They worked together as a devoted couple for 67 years. They loved visiting family and friends in Arkansas and visiting the place where they were married, having actually done it "in the middle of the road." In addition to their 5 children, they had 10 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild. Arthur passed away at the age of 91 just seven weeks before their 68th anniversary.
