"Mr. Howard County," former superintendent of Kokomo Schools and long-time fount of local historical knowledge, C.V. Haworth was born on a farm near New London in 1875. His Quaker roots were grounded in Howard County soil in the 1840s. As a boy he earned his education while working part-time for his father, and then began his more than half-century career as a school-teacher, administrator, and mentor to young people. His first teaching job was a district school in Monroe Township. From there he moved to New London School, Columbian School in Kokomo, Kokomo High School, and then into administration. ~~ On September 12, 1900, in Dubois County, he married Belle Cooper, also a descendant of early Indiana pioneers. Belle, a graduate of Indiana University, taught school prior to her marriage, and then raised the couple's 4 children: Catherine (Mrs. George) Shortle, Josephine (Mrs. Cyrus) Shearer, Edna (Mrs. Cole) Morton, and Robert C. Haworth. They also had 8 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren. ~~ Active in many educational and civic organizations, C.V. Haworth was named Kokomo's Most Distinguished Citizen in 1931. He died in 1976 at the age of 101, survived by his wife.
