Harold and Ruth were both born in Kokomo and lived next door to each other. Ruth's older sister, Aretha, was also a 1938 Kokomo H.S. classmate of Harold's. They were married when Ruth was 16 in the Church of the Nazarene on Oct. 22, 1938. Ruth worked as a housekeeper at St. Joseph Hospital, retiring after 25 years there. Harold received two Purple Hearts while serving in the U.S. Marine Corps during WWII and later served in the Indiana National Guard. He retired from Continental Steel, and was active in the Boy Scouts. They were the parents of 4 children, including Peggy (Mrs. Richard) Stephenson, of Kokomo, and Harold D. Gentry, jr, of Rapid City, Michigan.
The secret of their success, according to daughter, Peggy Stephenson: "Dad was good, but Mom was a wonderful person!"
