Were married in Flora, Indiana, on December 8, 1928, after less than four months of dating. They moved to Kokomo in the 1960s after farming in Fort Wayne for more than 30 years, as well as having other jobs. Pauline worked at J.C. Penneys, and they both opened and ran a restaurant for awhile. Their first car was a 1928 HupMobile, which cost about $75 used. At the time they bought the car in the '30s, their rent was $25 per month. They retired from their various endeavors in 1974. After nearly three-quarters of a century, their family has grown to include 4 children (Lois, Donna, Wilma and David), 15 grandchildren, and 26 great-grandchildren. The Alexanders live at Northwood Commons. In December 2001, to celebrate their 73rd anniversary, the 93-year-olds purchased new wedding rings to replace the originals, which were stolen, and were also featured in a Kokomo Perspective article.
The secret of their success: "Staying together so long," says Pauline, "takes the Lord. You have to open your heart and let Jesus in, to lead and guide you."
